How to do Clicker Dog Training
There are 3 basic steps to follow when training your dog to respond to a clicker.
1. Desired behavior – You need to convince your dog to obey your command to either sit, stay or fetch. Use a basic command to begin with such as rolling over, barking, coming or any other desirable trick.
2. Immediately the dog performs the action or command, mark the clicker and reward the dog. Consider that it may take two to three markings for the dog to learn what behavior resulted in the mark and reward. It is easier for clicker dog training to work because of the immediate response from both you and the dog. A verbal command would take longer to learn.
3. Once the action is completed, slowly repeat this process until they instill it in them and reinforce the behavior. Petting and praising the dog works just as well as giving the dog treats instead.
Transitioning to a Verbal Command
Now, once your dog has learnt to associate their behavior with the clicker, you can then begin to train them on verbal commands which will slowly replace the clicker marks. You can easily do this by saying the command, then clicking, then immediately follow the action with a reward. This will make it so much easier for the dog to associate all these three actions.
Continued clicker dog training results in your dog responding to verbal cues, and the praise for actions done which leads to their faster learning. With time the use of rewards (treats and praise) may be unnecessary because the dog will know that you want them to do something specific that pleases you.
