Dachshund Training

Honestly, aren’t Dachshunds some of the cutest dogs you have ever seen around? On the other hand, though, Dachshund training is a totally different story because the cute little sausage shaped dogs can be a bit stubborn I must say. Let us have a look at them to see if they require any kind of special training to help in controlling their behavior and attitude!

So what Makes Dachshunds Different from the other dogs?

Dachshunds are some of the most stubborn and independent dog breeds you will ever encounter requiring lots of patience. They love going for what they want and are good at making their own decision. They can even patiently wait for you to finish up with something they really want then get it.

You always have to remember that a Dachshund despite being a very cute and lovable dog is still a dog – requiring the proper treatment. Problems arise when you forget that it’s only a dog and you start treating the Dachshund like a person. Once you start letting the Dachshund get the upper hand, giving it extra privileges because of its cuteness you will lose the upper hand when training your Dachshund.

Remember that if you don’t properly train your Dachshund you’ll only be placing him at risk because their fiery will and natural personality can easily lead them to all kinds of mischief. The Dachshund back can be at risk when they climb onto high surfaces or jump repeatedly. Proper Dachshund training can solve these behaviors.

Fundamentals of Dachshund Training

You have to be exercising your Dachshund as frequently as possible and more so when they are still young. Dachshunds despite being small were initially bred to be hunting dogs that dug out vermin which justifies their high energy. Therefore if this energy is not used, it can and will come back to haunt you in your household.

The Dachshund training process can be much easier if the Dachshund has adequate exercise. The training still has to be carefully planned and firm, though.

Short sessions – This Dachshund training session should be conducted in short bursts of 5 minutes each. You have to take advantage of their commitment to doing one particular thing before they decide to change their mind and do what they want. It is very easy for them to decide not to listen to you and at this point breaking through to them can be a real challenge.

Basic session – Dachshunds should be trained in the basic commands such as “Sit”, “Stay” and the most important “Down”. Their elongated bodies limit their climbing or jumping scale. Please do carry them on to furniture and up or down the stairs. They have to be taught that these are not allowed for them.

Clicker training – Dachshund training will work particularly well when done while utilizing a clicker. This is so because the Dachshund hearing is not as great but the single sharp clicker sounds appropriatlety fits into their short attention spans.

Rewards – Dachshunds have a very strong will and punishing them can be a challenge. They often become stubborn and can even become aggressive when excessively punished. This then requires you to recognize more of their positive behavior with rewards than punishing their unwanted behavior. They do love all the physical attention they get. Regularly reward them with treats for good behavior when exhibited.

All in all Dachshund training can be a very trying experience because it requires lots of energy, time and a great deal of patience on the dog trainer’s part. You must remember not to let the Dachshunds cuteness get to you and warrant special treatment. The moment you will let your Dachshund gain ground on you it will be pretty hard regaining yours as the dog grows older!
