Training a Chihuahua the Easy Way

The adorable Chihuahua is one of the most common dog breeds in the United States. Being a small dog, very many owners do not take the time to try and learn how to train a Chihuahua, assuming that the little cutties cannot cause trouble due to their size. Such owners are usually shocked when they in fact realize that however small and pretty their Chihuahuas are, they are more aggressive than most dog breeds. Training a Chihuahua can be very time intensive and should be conducted when they are still very young. They can be extremely stubborn when it comes to obeying commands therefore require proper and thorough training.

Why You Should Know How to Train a Chihuahua

Chihuahuas have a very unique temperament; they can spend all their time with you, perfectly happy all day, since they are bred to be attached to their owner being with them wherever they go. This could lead to them displaying dominant behavior especially when they have not gone through the proper social training with other dogs. If not tamed, this can lead to numerous other aggression issues.

Chihuahuas naturally see themselves being as larger as any other dog which could be intimidating especially if your dog is not properly trained. Other poor behavior noticed in Chihuahuas include: aggression towards other dogs, excitement and continuous jumping from strange noises, standing off with strangers and being very snappy with children.  Training a Chihuahua is in fact possible and proper control over the dog can be achieved with time.

How to go about Training a Chihuahua

Taking control of the household should be the very first training to take your Chihuahua through because the little furry dog thinks they are in charge and often will display such behavior by doing whatever he/she wants around the house. You should not let them do so.

You must show who the leader of the pack is by establishing boundaries around your environment. Alpha leadership can be attained over the Chihuahua by:

i. Establishing feeding times – By setting feeding intervals, you will train the Chihuahua not to eat anytime they want.

ii. Walking habits – It is advisable you walk your Chihuahua at least twice a day. During this time, do not let them dictate the direction or pull the leash but make sure you are the one controlling the walk.  Chihuahuas require proper leash training otherwise they will get out of control.

iii. Furniture and Jumping – Remember the small size of the Chihuahua does not warrant you to let it control your space. You must impose your boundaries by not letting the dog get up when it wants. You have to let you Chihuahua know what furniture it’s allowed on and after that avoid responding to the whining and barking.

iv. Going and Coming – By paying attention to your Chihuahua only after it is calm and relaxed you will train it to sit still whenever you come in or leave the house.

Training a Chihuahua requires you to learn how to be the alpha leader so as not to let the dog feel like it is the one in charge.

Optimizing your Chihuahuas Mental Stimulation

While Chihuahuas can be worn out fast they do not get sufficient mental stimulation and exercises.  Consider this: How many Chihuahua owners have you seen going to dog parks or playing fetch with such small dogs? That is why training a Chihuahua is more so done at the speak and quiet, fetch, sit and stay or any other household commands you prefer.

Training a Chihuahua reduces the chances for the dog to be overwhelmed both by energy and boredom while not challenging you and eliminating the bad temperament a majority of Chihuahua owners have controlling the cute little dogs.
